In 1847 John was 9-10 years old, but he looks younger in the photo. It's possible this
image was
hehoused in 1849 when John died, 11 years old. The case of Dusinberre (below)
was
bought around the same time, so both images have possibly been rehoused at the same time.
The image is dark, lacks contrast, is out of focus a little and has a blue ish tint to it. It could've
been made around 1842-1843, when John was 5-6. The corners have been clipped though.
In the background a woman is visible. It doesn't look like his mother Mary Valeria Gildersleeve,
so perhaps she was the maid or a niece, as his sisters weren't old enough yet.
The family lived mainly in Warwick, Orange County, New York.
